Early Concepts of Light:

Einstein's photon electric effect: Light consists of photons, or massless bundles of electromagnetic energy, commonly known as particles.
Light has a dual nature, both particles and waves.

The Speed of Light:

Extra distance traveled/extra time measured= 300,000,000 km/1000 s= 300,000 km/s
Light year: The distance light travels in one year.

Electromagnetic Waves:

Electromagnetic wave: A part electric and part magnetic wave.
Electromagnetic spectrum: The range of electric magnetic waves.

Light and Transparent Materials

Opaque Materials:

Opaque: Materials that absorb light without reemission, or no light would be able to shine through.

Shadows:

Vocabulary:
Ray: A thin beam of light.
Shadow: Where light rays cannot reach.
Umbra: A total shadow.
Penumbra: A partial shadow.

Polarization:

Polarization: The aligning of vibration in a transverse wave, usually by filtering out waves of other directions.
Polarization axis: The axis that dictates the direction of the vibrations of the polarized light wave, and the direction that you would need to rotate objects to polarize the light.

Polarized Light and 3-D Viewing

3 dimensional vision depends on the impressions seen in both eyes at slightly different angles.
The axes of the lenses are right angles to each other, giving the brain the interpretation of depth. 3-D glasses the left eye sees only polarized light from th eleft, the right sees only polarized light from the right, giving the illusion of depth. This is why the screen appears to have overlapping images without glasses.
